Program History
The Wake Forest Diabetes Fellowship is a newly established, sponsored training program created to meet the growing need for physicians with advanced expertise in diabetes care. The program is housed within the long-standing Section on Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism, which has a decades-long reputation for excellence in diabetes research, innovation, and patient care. Wake Forest has been a recognized leader in diabetes management, supported by a multidisciplinary Diabetes and Endocrinology Center and a strong history of training residents, endocrine fellows, and physician-scientists.
This fellowship was designed to train board-certified or board-eligible physicians to become diabetes specialists. Trainees will gain expertise in glycemic management, prevention and treatment of diabetes complications, and advanced diabetes technology, an area of rapidly growing importance for both providers and patients. The program seeks to build a sustained pipeline of physicians skilled in comprehensive inpatient and outpatient diabetes management and emerging diabetes technologies.

The program encourages innovative research that can contribute to advancements in diabetes care and management. All Hoag facilities, inpatient and outpatient, incorporate a common EHR (Epic), which facilitates health data management and enables opportunities for population health.
